The lesson of course extends into our dealings with not only young children but also grown-up children. The thoughts/feelings you describe never leave one - the desire to connect with one's adult offspring, the wish to share positively in their lives, to be a "safe" place for them to discuss their (now adult) concerns, issues, fears, their own children etc. You remind me that one never ceases to feel yourself to be a parent even when your children are taller, smarter and better than you...
